What is Physiology and How to Study Physiology

So, what is physiology and how would you study physiology?

Human physiology?

  • It is the study of how the human body functions
  • The body functions to achieve homeostasis
    • Homeostasis is the state of relative constancy in the internal environment of the body
      • Essentially, the bodily functions are regulated

Despite being an interesting course, learning physiology can be challenging. Physiology covers a lot of material, so the amount of information can be overwhelming. Consequently, memorization plays a more important role in learning physiology than practicing problems.

“So, how do you succeed in a physiology course?”

First and foremost, do not cram all the information the day before an exam! Although some students can get away with this, cramming is not worth it. In order to learn physiology, spend at least 10 to 20 minutes a day going over what you learned in class or in our website. Second, focus more on the big picture or concept, than the nitty-gritty details. Study the key concepts and learn the key words. Third, organize your notes. Make a flow chart if you have to. As you will see in our physiology notes section, the subject is broken down into subtopics. Some of the examples are digestive system, renal physiology or nervous system. Finally, do a lot of practice problems. Practice problems evaluate your level of understanding. It’s better to get the practice problems wrong than the problems on the actual test. Therefore, take advantage of practice problems. Luckily, we offer plenty of practice problems for you to properly learn physiology and master it!
