What is ecology?

Ecology is the study of the interactions among organisms and between organisms and their environment.  
It is the study of the interactions between the organisms and their environment

The environment includes the abiotic and biotic factors

    • Nonliving
  • Biotic
    • Living

Population ecology is the study of the abundance, distribution and growth of populations.
A population consists of all the individuals of a species living in the same area.

 

Community ecology relates to the study of the interaction of populations
A community consists of a group of populations that live and interact in the same area.

Symbiosis

  • Mutualism
    • Both species benefit
  • Commensalism
    • One species benefit, while the other is unaffected
  • Parasitism
    • One species benefit, while the other species is harmed
