What is Biology?

What is Biology?

Biology is a natural science and it is the scientific study of living things.

  • Living Organisms:
    • Consist of one or more cells
      • Examples: bacteria; human beings
    • Contain genetic information and can reproduce
    • Respond to their environment
      • Living organisms can regulate their internal environment
    • Are able to obtain energy from the environment and use that energy to maintain biological processes
    • Are genetically related and have evolved.

There are many topics covered in biology. The major topics covered in general biology typically relate to the principles of cell theory, energy, homeostasis, genetics, and evolution. Notes on the major topics covered in general biology can be located on our Biology Help section.

  • Biology can be divided into many different branches, such as biochemistry, ecology, genetics, marine biology, microbiology and physiology.

Students who complete their education in the biological sciences are rewarded with many career opportunities. Graduates are able to pursue a career in the healthcare field. Many students who have studied biology aim to become medical doctors, nurses, pharmacists or even public health officials. There are also students who prefer researching in an academic or non-academic setting. Researchers can help develop innovative devices or even help formulate a new medicine. Other opportunities exist, such as working for the government, private businesses, or non-profit organizations.

Knowledge about the biological sciences is important because it contributes to society in many ways:

  • Pursuing knowledge in biology can lead to advancements in technology and medicine. Advancements in medicine have been influenced by the natural sciences, such as biology.
  • Adequate knowledge in biology helps contribute to the understanding of human influences on the environment.
  • Knowledge in biology can influence critical decisions made by society. For example, biologists can inform law-makers about certain policies related to science. Knowledge in biology can also lead to ethical concerns.
