There is a demand for tutors in the areas of math and science. Furthermore, tutors are needed for SAT math, writing and critical reading. The opportunities are plentiful.

So, how can get a tutoring job? There are several ways:

  • Go to the career center or the academic departments at your school and inquire about tutoring positions
    • Most schools have a learning assistance center where they provide applications for tutoring
  • Search on job search engines or even Craigslist. There are many tutoring centers that are hiring potential tutors.
    • Some examples include a local tutoring academy or even Kaplan.
  • Go to classrooms and ask the professor if you can provide your contact information. The professor may refer you to his or her students.
    • This will be even more helpful if you were a previous student who did well in the professor’s class.
  • Go to high schools, middle schools or even elementary schools.
    • Even a high school student can be a tutor, especially for middle school students.

Work at School

Colleges and Universities offer a lot of temporary job opportunities for students. Therefore, go to the career center or other departments within the school and inquire about possible job opportunities. For example, the school bookstore is typically in need of help during the beginning of the year. Also, look for student researcher positions for the research laboratories in campus.

Provide a Service

Strive to become an entrepreneur because it is an exciting way to earn money. Provide a service to your community or sell products. There are many different ideas. All you need to do is implement the ideas.

    • If you did a great job on your standardized exams (like the SAT or ACT), create a mini tutoring program where you help prepare a group of students for an upcoming SAT exam.
    •  If you have a talent for making websites, then become a web designer. There are many local businesses, organizations, clubs and even families who wish to have a website, but don’t have the skills to make one. Ask local businesses or organizations if they would like a website. You can develop a website for them for a small fee.
    • If you have artistic skills, you can create products and sell it to your local community, school or even online. For example, you can design t-shirts and sell it to students at school. You can use your creativity to help make things that others might buy.
    • Remember those stories of hearing little kids making a lemonade stand and selling lemonade? Well, you can do the same. There are many parks that have a lot of people playing sports (like baseball, soccer and basketball). You can sell snacks and drinks.

Sometimes, the financial aid office can give you information on scholarships that have very specific conditions. Also, look for scholarships that offer only a couple hundred dollars in reward. These are usually easier to compete for.
