Molality and Molarity

Molality is the number of moles of solute dissolved in one kilogram of solvent. The symbol given for it is m.

The units are: mol/Kg

Molarity is the number of moles of solute in one liter of a saturated solution. It is a concentration term that is based on chemical mass units. Molarity is given the symbol M.

The units are: mol/L

These two concepts are subtopics for the concentration units section of chemistry. Other important subtopics of concentration units are mole fraction and percent by mass.

Mole fraction is defined as the ratio of the # of moles of one component of a mixture to the total # of moles of all components in that mixture.

Percent by mass is defined as the ratio of the mass of a solute to the mass of the solution, multiplied by 100 percent.

Examples for these ‘concentration units’ concepts will be added soon!
