Exponents in Algebra

Exponents are used to write repeated products. If n is any positive integer and a is any real number, then the symbol an is defined as follows:

an = a x a x a ….a, where a appears n times.
Basically a appears as a factor of n times.

Here is a summary of all the properties related to the topic. All the statements in the box are true for any integers m and n, and any real numbers a and b. Also assume that the denominators are not zero.

Properties of Exponents

In scientific notation, a number is written as the product of a number in which the absolute value is at least 1, but less than 10, and a power of 10.

Examples:

    234,000 = 2.34 x 105
7700 =   7.7 x 103
.001 =      1 x 10-3
.00000555 = 5.55 x 10-6
